What the World Believes

How many people know that the very first statement that Satan ever made in the Bible was a LIE?

Let’s go there and examine the interchange between him and Eve: Gen 3:1-4

1Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

Actually, the very first words out of Satan’s mouth were in the form of a question – “..hath God said, ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?” after Eve’s response – he says: “Ye shall not surely die…”

And ever since then most religions (including main stream Christianity) have taught the LIE of the immortality of the soul!

But what does God say?

Gen 2: 17 “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”

See also:

Ezek 18:4 “Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.”

Ezek 18:20 “The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.”

Rom 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

The Plain Truth about  Immortality

God created man mortal, just like the rest of God’s creation on earth.

Ecc 3:19-20 “For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.  All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.”

immortalityBut in the very next verse, God’s inspired word explains that there is a spiritual distinction between man and beasts: Ecc 3:21 “Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?”

THIS is where God separates man form the rest of creation – it is the spirit in man that gives us the potential to be more than just flesh and blood. Very simply, the spirit is what imprints who we are into us, and upon physical death, this “recording” returns to God, and is “re-activated” at our resurrection. The Spirit in animals dies with them. This is why everyone “RIP’s  – Rest In Peace” when they die – see Ecc 9:5 “For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.”  – and Ecc 9:10 “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.”

So the Bible makes a distinction between:

Body – refers to a physical body  – alive or dead

Soul – the Hebrew word is “nephesh” – and this word is also applied to animals, and generally refers to a living creature

Spirit – the consciousness or awareness that a being has  – our spirit is different to that of animals. And to be like God (to be eternal or immortal  like He is) – we also need to have His Spirit – THIS is the GIFT mentioned in Rom 6:23 above!

The doctrine of the resurrections will be dealt with in future posts, but learn more about the truth about immortality by clicking here.
